I've had this piece brewing for a while, but decided to wait until the first 30 seasons of The Simpsons were available to watch on Disney Plus. Here are 22 post-Golden Age episodes to prove the show still has pep in its step. (Full disclosure: This article was originally titled: "22 Short But Amazing Modern-Day Films About Springfield," but even I'm not that desperate for a pun.)

We're all gonna be stuck indoors for the next while, which means it's a good time to take up a new hobby, like quilting or basket-weaving. ...But if you're on this website, you're presumably more interested in TV recommendations, and I've got plenty of those! Starting this week, I will be posting write-ups on some great TV shows (generally ones that I haven't written about on the main site before) that are worth streaming in these highly TV-necessary times. To kick things off, we journey to the world of weird and whimsical in Gravity Falls!

Are you havin' a laugh? If not, check out Extras, a hilarious Britcom that's currently on Netflix. After you read my pitch for the show, that is.

I'm a bit advocate of Britcoms (they're our most important cultural export!), but I never actually watched Extras. An ex-friend of mine once tried talking me into watching it, but once we'd fallen out big-time I sometimes applied a kind of guilt-by-association thing to everything he liked, which I would agree is probably unfair, but there it is (I'll never watch Breaking Bad for the same reason). The Patrick Stewart thing does sound funny, though.

Surprised to learn you haven't seen it, given your relative affinity for UK sitcoms. Then again, I only watched it myself fairly recently, and I'm supposed to be the grand poobah of TV (that's what it says on my card, anyhow).
But yes, very funny show. And I'm not exaggerating about the finale - it's up there with Angel and The Shield as one of the most perfect TV endings I've ever seen.

Well, I'm also not exactly fond of Ricky Gervais, either (I'm fine with him in small doses like The Little Prince and The Muppets, and he wasn't "on" in The Unbelievers documentary).

I wax and wane on Gervais as well - his humor can strike me as being mean-spirited just for the heck of it. Extras works better than some of his other comedy, though, since his character has a conscience and doesn't wield power over others.
He's got a new show on Netflix (After Life) which I haven't yet seen, but plan to check out soon enough.

Was feeling kind of sick for the early part this week, but thankfully, things seem to be clearing up - just in time for us to talk about the best HBO drama ever. (What do you mean, it sounds like I'm trying to start a debate?)

I took a couple weeks off for matzah-munching, but let's get back to the TV Shows You Should Watch project. This week, an ode to Disney's overlooked animated masterpiece Gargoyles.

I write a lot about TV shows that are easily available - either through streaming sites or old-fashioned DVD sets - but today I'm looking at the other side of the tracks: TV shown that have never received a proper streaming release, and probably never will.

Hey, I remember Suburgatory, if only for all the jokes about the incestuous sexual tension between Sisto and Levy. I think this is why on Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist the father character is basically immobile - so that poor Jane Levy wouldn't have yet another show derailed by the male lead's Big Dilf Energy.

I seem to recall you bringing up Suburgatory on the old forum (maybe the Six Feet Under thread?) to mention Jeremy Sisto as the Hot Dad.
Not sure why I remember that, and it would probably be best to forget it as swiftly as possible.

Not TV-specific, but I decided to write a bit about the recent JK Rowling controversy - not precisely the politics of it, but rather what it says about the state of cancel culture. (Don't worry, it's got an optimistic premise. I'm not always bitter about the online world.)

I wrote about the recent string of new streaming services that have been popping up lately (Apple TV+, Quibi, Peacock), partly because I wanted to discuss the different ways they're attempting to challenge the TV landscape, and partly because I wanted an excuse to use the worst title ever.
