And now, Issue #4.
So... more "Zeppo" references. Oh joy. You can all guess how thrilled I am by that.
Granted, this story isn't as Xander-heavy (or exaggerated in its story) as "The Zeppo," but it clearly borrows some elements from the episode, which focuses on Xander feeling useless and outcast from the rest of the team. His crush on Buffy gets a quick spotlight in this issue (she's got her own crush on Young Robin Wood, who makes another glorified cameo), and his general lack of intelligence leads him to bungle into a trap by Spike and Drusilla. (Where the latter may be about to turn him into a vampire!! I'll... believe that when the next issue shows me.)
Part of the problem with Xander's character in this series still feels like the forced comic relief, and he just isn't funny. The best comedic moments in this series - like in the TV show - come from well-developed characters, and there isn't enough room for Xander to feel properly developed. (And don't even get me started on Willow, who still barely has any personality to speak of.)
The highlight of this issue is the scene between Buffy and her mother's boyfriend, Eric. Given how Buffy's mother (in the TV series) did not exactly have the best taste in men, it's refreshing to see a guy who honestly seems to care about her, and even seems willing to give advice to Buffy herself. Granted, he'll probably turn out to be evil in a future issue, but let me enjoy this while it lasts.
However, the big surprise of this issue is the reveal of Angel. Yes, he only makes a cameo at the end and utters no dialogue, but the Boreanaz-like chin and brood are unmistakable. Boom! Studios (good lord, I'm really starting to hate that name) made the sudden announcement last week that Angel would be getting his own comic book rebboot as well, and the premiere issue was released alongside Buffy #4 (I haven't read it yet).
Also, I think Jenny Calendar makes a cameo as well. Giles is dating her, and hopefully it goes better than last time.
Next issue: Anya holding a bunny!
