My main points of reference on Richard Jenkins were Six Feet Under and Cabin in the Woods, so it was nice to see him play a character that wasn't a sarcastic veteran know-it-all but rather a guy who was somewhat oblivious to the goings-on around him while being a very wishful thinker. I think that it did get a little heavy-handed in moments, but his complaints about being born "too early or too late" made sense given the sexual practices of the time, still dealing with the buttoned-up qualities of the fifties, long after the "confirmed bachelor" era but well before Stonewall Inn.
I also dug the scars and somehow was so caught up in the movie that even while I made the connection out of the gate (you're right about that opening sequence being amazing), I had let it slip until the finale when it finally happened.

I thnk GDT is a bit of a sentimentalist, which isn't really the sin some of the more cynical viewers out there would make it out to be, but is nonetheless worth noting.

Casino - 4.5/5
Night of the Living Dead - 4/5
Would be a 3.5 if not for the ridiculously fantastic first fifteen minutes and some choice scenes later on in the film.

Uh, Jeremy, I think we need a 2018 thread.
