It's Super Mario Maker... but with Mega Man. Oh, and free. I've been waiting for months for this to come out, and it's finally here!!! I will certainly be making stuff with this and will post here accordingly if anyone is interested.

Cool. Hopefully Capcom doesn't hit it with a copyright suit. I mean, you'd still be able to make levels if you downloaded it, but they could take the server down, denying you the opportunity to play other user-created levels.

Capcom is very lax about people making (free) works based on their IPs. That Street Fighter/Mega Man crossover that came out for the franchise's 25th anniversary was a fan project that came under Capcom's radar and got an official release rather than a cease and desist.
It's the polar opposite of Nintendo's approach. (One of my old Internet buddies was on the team for Pokemon Uranium. Sad face.)

I can understand why Nintendo would want to protect its intellectual property when it comes to a flagship character like Mario. That said, there are still plenty of Mario mods out there. Mario Maker's way more convenient, though.

In Nintendo's defense, when they halted that fan-made Metroid II remake, it turned out that they had been working on that exact same game concept and hadn't announced it yet, so there's a justifiable case to be made that it could have cut into sales of a soon-to-be-released product.

That's a fair point, but it's a fan game for the PC. Not sure how many Nintendo fans are into PC gaming. Honestly, it probably would have encouraged people to play more Metroid games rather than cutting into their market. Even if it would, it would have been nicer of them to shut it down early in development instead of shutting it down just after release. To be honest, if I were Nintendo, I would have hired the man. He's seriously talented to design a game that's comparable to Super Metroid by himself!

Well... kind of. I mean, I doubt it actually would have resulted in a massive monetary loss. That said, while I do believe that major media companies are generally a bit too protective of their copyrights, I think it's a bit absurd to suppose that distributing something nearly identical to a contemporary product counts as fair use. Mega Maker is a bit different since there's no comparable official product and Capcom has historically encouraged fan projects anyway, so there's an implicit stamp of approval.

It kind of depends with Capcom. While they are famously cool about letting people screw around with Mega Man, they did shut down a fan remake of Resident Evil 2 because it was known that they were working on something similar. With Nintendo, I often wonder how much of that was NoA being literally run by a lawyer for years, which may have contributed to them being the most family-friendly (censorship, etc) and most likely to pounce when fangames came to light.
The Metroid 2 thing really sucked though because the dude had been working on it solo for years and it's been ages since they've done anything relevant with the franchise. Makes me wonder what would happen if someone took to remaking something like Castlevania since Konami's attitude of late is "lol we're going to sit on our IPs and get rich making pachinko machines"
