In other news, since we were talking about the Star Wars fandom earlier, the actress who played Rose had to delete all posts off her instagram due to constant harassment.
The reaction to The Last Jedi kind of proved this already, but there's a lot of massive jerks who really enjoy Star Wars and torturing the people who make it less enjoyable for them.

Yeah, that really sucks. Stuff like that has happened before. Poor Jake Lloyd was tormented for many years after Phantom Menace, even though he was just a kid when it came out.

Is there something about Star Wars that makes a certain subsection of its fanbase more nauseating and obnoxious than other nerd-heavy franchises? I know that most popular series have their share of bottom-feeders, but you never seem to hear about any as much as Star Wars.

Star Wars is arguably the most famous and popular franchise on Earth. I think it just has a larger number of awful fans just because it's so large in general.

This is what has been disturbing me, coming from my Youtube feed, since I clicked on just one Star Wars video (I don't even remember the subject). I've never seen anything like it, and everyone involved either lacks the self-awareness to realize the negative impacts of their words or just simply don't care.
On a similar note, Youtube personnel will overreact to harmless ads and videos with too much swearing, but not to groups or content creators openly advocating - or at the very least, tolerating - harassment and general hate for certain individuals. Makes me question our understanding of morality in today's society when harmless words are viewed as less tolerable then belligerence over a fictional story.

YouTube has an algorithm which they use to detect and flag "inappropriate" content, but it's unsurprisingly flawed and spotty in its pickings. Lots of relatively harmless creators have seen their videos demonitized, while more controversial vids may sometimes escape detection. Part of the problem is that the more bigoted videos tend to fly under the radar (since they usually get fewer views than more mainstream content).
I just find the racist Star Wars backlash ironic because I still remember when Jar-Jar garnered controversy for apparently being a racist caricature. (Although maybe the Jar-Jar controversy had less to do with racism than with him being an all-around awful character.)

Solo was a blast! It benefited from having a smaller-scale, more personal story, which is not only a good idea for a spin-off that exists between films of a grander scale, but also good for a prequel that needs to avoid having too many Earth-shattering events that awkwardly aren't mentioned in chronologically later installments. The involvement of pre-existing characters was constructive to their stories without being overbearing or overtaking the film as its own entity. I'd like to see a direct sequel, so hopefully the box-office returns aren't too low for Disney to decide to make one.

Alden Ehrenreich has said that he's contracted for three films, implying that Disney plans to make a Solo trilogy. Because everything in Star Wars must be a trilogy.
I'd be fine with a sequel, but again, I'm hoping it will try to challenge the typical Star Wars formula. I know the concept of a prequel confines the story possibilities, but it would be great to have a Solo film that bucks the standard conventions (as Lord and Miller were apparently trying to do before they were taken off the project).

My boss gave me a Cineplex gift card because I worked some extra hours when I didn't have to, so maybe I'll check out Solo, if only to see Glover as Lando (I like Ehrenreich and Emilia Clarke just fine as well). I wouldn't mind seeing Ocean's 8, either.

Woody Harrelson is good too, I always enjoy his performances. He almost makes Now You See Me 2 watchable.
Almost.

Woody Harrelson is a great actor. And the fact that he's been working so much lately means that I no longer automatically assume his last name is "Boyd."

Is Paul Bettany playing a pretty standard-issue villain?

Yeah, he's pretty run-of-the-mill. On the one hand, that makes his character rather forgettable. On the other hand, it's kind of a nice change of pace to have a villain who isn't a stand-in for the all-powerful Empire.
I think most of the cast did strong work, although I'm disappointed that Donald Glover and Phoebe Waller-Bridge didn't get more screentime together. I mean, the film has literally partnered up the creators of the two best TV shows of 2018 - you'd think they'd have more time to play off one another.

You should know by now that TV means nothing -- NOTHING!! -- to film.

Welp, that was fast. Lucasfilm has put the proposed Boba Fett and Obi-Wan prequel films on hold for the moment, and are now concentrating more on the Rian Johnson trilogy.
While this is obviously at least a partial response to the tepid Solo box-office returns, I also can't help but feel like the producers are trolling the trolls: "Gee, looks like you don't want prequel films with white male protagonists. Okay, how 'bout three films from the Last Jedi guy?"
