I think "Gangster's Paradise" neatly aligns with the last stretch of time when Sonic was a bankable, cultural icon. The song itself came out in 1995 and Sonic and Knuckles, as the delayed expansion to Sonic 3, came out at the end of 1994. Sure the Console Wars nominally drew on after that but Sonic as a franchise didn't have a distinct main series entry in the Saturn era, so Sonic effectively peaked in the mid-90s and not after that.
Hello, this has been an entry in gaming history from that guy who had a Genesis instead of a SNES for most of the 90s.
Hey look, another respect in which Detective Pikachu is kicking the Sonic movie's butt! Using an instrumental version of the Pokemon theme in one trailer and "Happy Together" (invoking the famous Smash 64 trailer) in the other.

Dang, the Sonic movie got pushed back to February. I guess they really are serious about redesigning it. I'm surprised.

I've seen a few promos for Terminator: Dark Fate. It's a weird franchise to think about because I feel like its overall arc is closer to that of a horror franchise: The first few entries were excellent, then it starts to drift, and eventually turns into campy dreck (we are still waiting for Terminator in Space, which is the herald of death). Or perhaps another comparison would be Die Hard except I think that people regard the third one as good? In any case, this one is bringing back Linda Hamilton as Sarah Connor and features Mackenzie Davis continuing to only ever appear in sci-fi or indie films. I mean, I'll probably watch it.

Well, with that cast and that director, I would generally expect it to be good, but alas, the reviews for the film coming out of Cannes are not great.

So it looks like the Internet is walking back some of its criticisms about the CGI in the Sonic film. Why? Because at least it isn't THIS.

I don't know what's worse, the uncanny animal/human hybrid design, or the fact that they look too human to be naked.

I could have sworn I'd already expressed this here before, but if you're not stoked about Bill & Ted Face the Music then I don't know what to say to you.

Hey Jeremy,
If you're determined to watch only one creepy clown film this Fall, I suppose you could just see It: Chapter 2, and then watch Scorsese's King of Comedy and Taxi Driver in place of Joker. Mind you, the early buzz on It is very mixed, whereas festival heads in Venice and Toronto are high on Joker. Regardless, those two Scorsese films are clearly the primary influence on Joker, even more so than Batman comics.

Taxi Driver has been on my watchlist for the longest time, but I still haven't watched it. So that's a viable suggestion.
A filmgoing friend of mine really wants to see the new It, so I might go with him, despite the sequel's likely increased violence/terror factor over the original (since the kids are all grown up now). And Joker is... I mean, it's the Joker, and Joaquin Phoenix is great, and the trailers look amazing, so who knows. (There's already Oscar buzz around the film! Could Black Panther have started a trend?)
