Freudian Vampire:
Hey, near-silence doesn't have to be a bad thing. There's very little dialogue in the first sections of "2001" after all, and none for a full fifteen minutes of TWBB.

Oh, absolutely. I can understand why it might be viewed as a deterrent though, and wanted to have a little fun with that.

There's something interesting I've noticed about the DVDs I've been watching; as little of the dialogue is translated into subtitles as possible. Things like names, yes, no, repeated phrases, greetings, and simple pleasantries aren't usually put into subtitles. Dekalog is slow paced enough and has enough dialogue without important content this actually works very well, though, so that your eyes aren't constantly being distracted. I wouldn't want to watch your typical anime this way, but it works well for something like this.

guttersnipe: Indeed, that's very much the case with my Artificial Eye DVDs. There's a moment in "VIII" that instantly springs to mind when one character is asked a question and her response isn't subtitled at all, but you get the impression it's "yes, it was" or something similar. There's another unsubbed moment in "V" when Jacek whispers "Jezus" as he bears witness to the violence he's inflicted. I guess they figured less is more, and I agree. Where are you at in the show? And are you enjoying it?

Zarnium:
The last one I watched was "IV." I really like the way the series is presented and put together; a lot of screen time is often devoted to a single character being alone, which sounds really boring, but Kieslowski manages to make these scenes be incredibly expressive and revealing. Overall, there's a very rich visual and atmospheric element to the show that I like, and it feels very real and emotive.
Unfortunately, while I like the presentation, I find that the stories themselves don't do a whole lot for me, so the series as a whole is a bit of a mixed bag. I'm sure I'll go into more detail once I've finished them all.

OK, fair enough. Plotting is a low rung for me at the best of times, and in the case of Dekalog, it's pretty much the only thing I tend to come down on.
I look forward to your comments once you've completed the series!

I mean, that attitude predates Dekalog by two... millennia?

I'd go further than that. You see this stuff in the writings of the Old Testament.

Encountering that quote a couple of weeks after that review? Too much of a coincidence for me. Now I'm the one receiving abstract signals.

Most of the interested parties will have already tracked down copies of the show and these may well even be removed by the time they're acted upon, but one kind soul has reupped six episodes to YouTube. They're not great quality (no better or worse than before, I don't think), but they're at least ripped from the hardsubbed Artificial Eye release, so you've got accurate translations and quotes will match up to my reviews.
"IV", "V", "VI", "VII", "VIII" and "X".
In other good news, curiosity led me to discover that if you google 'Dekalog reviews' one of mine appears on the very first page of results!

If you buy into evolutionary psychology, it's as old as the species most likely. And it's an extremely archaic attitude for modern society, yet one I'm fairly sure will endure for a long time.

Freebie time! I was very happy to recieve Zbigniew Preisner's Dekalog and Three Colours scores for my birthday, and because it's a bit difficult to share cake online, I'm forwarding the goods onto you. It's been ages since I've ripped a CD and I thought I could do it at a higher quality than 192kbps, but it's the best that Media Player would let me do, and what I've checked sounds lush anyway. The Dekalog score doesn't contain anything from "X" because according to the liner notes its (borderline-absent) score isn't Preisner's original work, but there's several tracks from "V", "VI" and "IX", so it's no Zbiggie.
Enjoy! I think they're up for a fortnight or something; let me know if there's any problems.

Heads up for those of you who live in New York-- the IFC Center is showing all ten Dekalogs and A Short Film About Killing for the next few weeks.
