I normally get quite aggravated having to defend people who pursue a "woke agenda", but in Chibnall's case it seems to operate as a substitute for good writing (I think his whole characterisation for Yaz began and ended with him declaring "I've created a Indian girl!"). And it's a big shame, because I think in terms of sets and settings, it's arguably never looked better. The second Whittaker series evaporated most of the good-will I'd extended towards her run, to the point where I'd be extremely upset if a male replacement (or, return to status quo) was interpreted as a norms' victory for deigning to afford a woman a man's job. Still, I have some faith that the good ship Who will be steered back on-course next time.

That doesn't change the fact that Chibnall himself appears to be a mediocre hackneyed writer who constantly pats himself on the back for cosmetic changes with no underlying substance to back them up, and I think it's fair to call him out as such. You can break barriers by casting a (quite fine) actress to play the Doctor all you want, but have you really accomplished much if you then proceed to write her as the most passive, inconsistent, and basically useless version of the character? I like the changes he's made in front of the camera; it's the other stuff that's missing.

Wow. In a very fitting end for the Chris Chibnall era of Doctor Who, which desperately tried to ape the Russell T. Davies era without understanding why it worked in the first place, Russell T. Davies is returning to Doctor Who for the 60th anniversary year and at least one season, probably more after that. The BBC must think Chibnall's left it in quite a state--this is unprecedented in the show's history.
It's concerning that the show has to consult a previous show-runner, but if they do, I think they made the right choice. RTD's smart enough to realize how television's changed since 2005, and it will still probably feel fresh. Looking forward to 2023. Especially when the 'Not My Doctor' crowd see what kind of politics RTD will shove in there, haha.
