The Uproxx Critics' Poll is up! Their Top 10 shows of the year: 1. The Leftovers2. The Handmaid's Tale
3. Big Little Lies4. Better Things5. Twin Peaks: The Return6. The Good Place7. Halt and Catch Fire8. Insecure9. Game of Thrones10. Better Call SaulLooks like I underestimated the power of The Leftovers. I may give the third season a last-minute catch-up before the year is done. This sounds like my eternal struggle to always try and catch up on Halt and Catch Fire before posting a list. That said I think my time doing top 10 lists has ended, my interests and free time have shifted that I can't really commit to keeping up with the massive amounts of TV I once did. I watched 5 shows on that list this year, which isn't bad, and they'd all most likely be somewhere in my top 10 though Big Little Lies would really be pushing it - well acted but not really a consequential show in any way.

Yeah, I don't think I would have gotten into Big Little Lies, particularly given my general aversion to David E. Kelley. But I really do want to watch the last season of The Leftovers, which seems to have converted even those who were on the fence about Season Two.

Well I can't really remember exactly what you were on the fence about with Season 2, Jeremy to be able to give you a wholehearted recommendation or not.
But Season 3 is weird but yet affecting in the most wonderful ways!

My issues with Season Two essentially boiled down to "Very well-made show, but ultimately not for me." (This was a definite step up from Season One, which I didn't think was all that well-made to begin with.)
I'm currently in middle of Better Things S2, and I still need to finish The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. But the winter break will hopefully give me enough time to binge the last Leftovers season within the next week.

Personally, I'm livid that Black Mirror is airing its next season on the 29th, giving me 48 hours to watch it if I want to put it on a "best of 2017" list.

WHAT???
I didn't realize it was coming out so soon! Time to be existentially terrified again, yippee!

Also frustrating is that Netflix is premiering the new season of Black Mirror on the same day as the new season of Bill Nye Saves the World.
That's too much existential terror for one weekend.

So, I crunched the numbers on the Uproxx list, and here are the individual picks for the #1 show of the year:
1. The Leftovers (14 votes) 2. The Handmaid's Tale (8) 3. Twin Peaks: The Return (7) 4. Game of Thrones (4) 5. Big Little Lies (3)
Two votes each for Better Things, The Good Place, The Vietnam War, Mindhunter, and Crazy Ex-Girlfriend.
One vote each for Insecure, Better Call Saul, GLOW, Stranger Things 2, The Young Pope, Catastrophe, Samurai Jack, Claws, and Vikings.
And oddly enough, not a single vote for my (tentative) #1 show.

Wow, GLOW came out ahead of both Master of None (which, to me, was better in its second season) and Bojack. It's too bad it's about female wrasslin', because in all other respects, it's right up Jeremy's alley (strong ensemble of diverse and well-drawn female characters, witty dialogue, etc.).

If i have time to fit GLOW into the next week, I may give it a try. But I have to say, the latest season of OitNB has kind of killed my investment in Jenji Kohan-produced Netflix shows with diverse ensembles of female characters and witty dialogue.

Is it possible that OitNB suffered creatively because Kohan was more focused on GLOW?

I don't think she was all that involved on GLOW, actually - she's mainly just a producer. Although I'm not sure how involved she was in the latest OitNB season, either. (It's the first season where she didn't write the finale.)

I know you've all been waiting in agony, but fret not: I'll be posting my "Best Shows of the Year" list tomorrow.
It will be a Top 15 list - comprised of 3 network, 7 cable, and 5 streaming shows.
Expect the unexpected.
