The very idea of Batgirl getting her own movie sounds... highly unlikely. Though I would definitely be onboard.
(As long as Zack Snyder and David Ayer stay far, far away.)

Eh, Joss was attached to Wonder Woman ages ago as well, and we know how that turned out.

But Wonder Woman is still getting made! And only ten years after Joss bailed on it.

And now Joss will be directing the re-shoots (which he also wrote) on Justice League, because Snyder has had to step away following the suicide (back in March) of his 20-year-old daughter (which is very sad). Principal photography finished months ago, but most of these types of films do a fair amount of re-shooting, for connective tissue and whatnot. I don't know whose name will be on the film (as director): possibly both.

Well, Joss is stepping down from Batgirl. And given that he was the one who pitched the film to DC in the first place, I don't know if they'll wind up replacing him.
Oh, well. I guess they'll have to rely on the other 17 films they currently have in production.

Now Joss Whedon can get back to his true passion-- getting lambasted on Twitter.

I'm sure Joss will scoop up a new project soon enough. Anything to distract audiences from the Avengers movie he isn't directing. As for Batgirl, DC might still try to give her a solo movie. After all, we know how respectfully they've treated her in the past:

Well, the Batgirl movie is now in theaters!
I mean, it's only five minutes long... and it's a cartoon... and it's not that great... and it's basically a commercial for the upcoming DC Super Hero Girls TV series.
But still, we take our victories when we get them!

Three years ago, DC announced that they were looking for a female director for the Batgirl film after Joss backed out. Today they announced it will be directed by a pair of non-females, Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah (who previously made Bad Boys for Life). There's a moral to this story, perhaps.
More noteworthy is that Batgirl will apparently skip a theatrical release, and will be the first superhero film released exclusively on HBO Max. Even as theaters return to life, one wonders if the cinematic landscape hasn't undergone some permanent changes over the past year.

And now, after spending some $90 million filming the Batgirl movie, Warner Bros. has pulled the plug. They will not be releasing the film in theaters, or on HBO Max, or anywhere apparently. Sounds kinda like they're ashamed of it and willing to take the loss.
Baffling (and disappointing) move, to be honest. And it comes right as they're facing mounting issues over another DC movie, The Flash, which has already completed filming on a $200 million budget and is now in limbo due to Ezra Miller doing all sorts of extremely non-superheroic things. Just a bang-up year for the DCEU all around.

On the bright side, despite all the behind the scenes messes they've had two of their highest quality projects in quite some time this year with Peacemaker and The Batman (I know that's not technically DCEU but it's the same organizations).
So I would consider it at least a mixed year. I don't have a lot of optimism for the remaining DC properties hitting the screens by the end of 2022 either.

Ezra Miller really read that Vulture piece about JW and said "hold my beer."
