I´m finishing up season 3 and the series of Hannibal. And even though I´m enjoying the characters, the dialogue and the music, there´s still something that kinda puts me off and I prefer season 2 and 1 to this one, although it is addictive as hell and so, so good.
But I find some moments too artsy, even a bit pretensious. It just feels too impersonal at times, that it takes itself too seriously and it feels like the show is trying to prove something, trying to prove it can be edgy. I don´t know how to explain it better but that´s how I feel and I also feel the other seasons were more personal.
Am I making any sense on this? Has anyone seen "Hannibal" and this season?

Yep. Hannibal was always somewhat arty and self-satisfying, but Season Three just goes too far. There's barely any real character development, and the pacing is agonizingly slow.
It gets better in the second half once an actual story takes shape, but overall, it's by far the weakest season of the show.

Good, I almost thought I was the only one thinking this because most reviews I read praise the show to death. And I definitively see the positives of the show but it sometimes leaves me disconnected.
Maybe that´s why I don´t like Bryan Fuller or Aaron Sorkin: most of their shows are kinda smug. For example, I can´t stand Pushing Daisies and The Newsroom, although I admit I never saw West Wing. But even the Social Network written by Sorkin has that pretensious quality. Maybe that´s also I´m not a big fan of the movie.

Have you seen Wonderfalls, by Brian Fuller? I'm not sure that would qualify as pretentious...
Tim Minear was also involved with that. It's only 13 episodes in total, only six of which actually aired on Fox.

I think only four episodes of Wonderfalls aired on Fox. Thanks a lot, Fox.
And West Wing is Sorkin's least pretentious show (which is not saying much, admittedly).

Yeah, it's been many years since I watched that show. A female friend of mine was a big fan of it.

I've actually considered reviewing it for CT in the past. It has some good character and thematic development, and only 13 episodes long. Perhaps someday it will find its way onto the site.

Really? Wonderfalls is by Bryan Fuller? I remember seeing it on tv on 2003 and enjoying it. I actually thought it was all Tim Minear. I have to watch it again, though.

Jeremy, what did you think of the series finale? Since you seem to share my view about Hannibal being a bit off sometimes, I wanted to know your opinion.
I thought the episode was really, really good and those last 10 minutes were amazing. Still, I couldn´t help but feel a bit disconnected from it. Even that final embrace didn´t seem true enough for me. It just all feels too artsy. Or maybe it´s me that wants more emotion.
But besides that, amazing dialogues mainly between Will and Hannibal, Will and Bedelia, and great soundtrack. Madds Mikelsen and Hugh Dancy are perfect for these roles. A show I wouldn´t mind rewatching .
And btw, what do you think about how they´re saying, they want to bring the show and have already begun talking about a new season?

The finale was probably the best episode of Season Three, although it still suffered from the same navel-gazing issues that plagued much of the season. It has a great climax, and functions as a pretty good series finale. And that post-credits scene is memorably disturbing.
I'm curious to see what a fourth season would look like, although I'm concerned that putting it on cable/streaming would inspire the show to ratchet up the gore.

I recently finished watching the show, and I have to say, I agree with everything already said here. I am shocked Season 3 got such positive reviews. It was alternatively boring and frustrating. The first 7 episodes took elements of Hannibal/Hannibal Rising, which are universally not considered Harris' best work. But it was still a disappointment how meandering and incoherent the first half of the season was. I mean, what was the point of Chiyoh? The Red Dragon arc in the last few episodes was definitely better, but it still didn't quite work, despite Richard Armitage's excellent performance. It left me feeling a bit uncomfortable, rather than transfixed and horrified like Seasons 1 and 2. I suspect this is because they had a much more interesting premise-Hannibal's hiding in plain sight and Will's slowly figuring it out/trying to stop him respectively. Season 3 loses what made the show great and thrilling to watch, which is a shame.

I wonder of I'd have enjoyed the back half of Season Three more if it hadn't immediately aired after the first half. The immediate tonal whiplash hurts the story more than it helps. Maybe a seasonal split could have given viewers some time to recalibrate.
(Ironic, given that I'm usually not a fan of season splits. In fact, I may shortly have a Blog post out about them...)
