A thread to discuss anything and everything about Wonderfalls, with no concern for spoilers. Talk about the show's psychological underpinnings, the fractious relationships between members of the Tyler family, and the multiple definitions of the words "Lovesick Ass."
I'm rewatching some of these episodes for the first time in years, so my memory may be a bit spotty. But I'll contribute what I can.

This show had the potential to be very episodic and focus on fleeting guest stars rather than the regular characters or the deeper implications of the central concept, so I'm glad that it struck a nice balance between the two, with Jaye not only helping out the troubled-person-of-the-week, but dealing with her own personal issues and coming to terms with the talking animals. There were also fewer "I'm talking to the thing no one else can see, so they think I'm talking to them" moments than I was expecting, which is nice because shows like Quantum Leap and BattleStar Galactica have worn me out on that already. I was afraid that Jaye's family were going to be little more than one-note unlikeable stock characters at first, but they all came to be fairly complex before too long. Like, I initially thought that Aaron was just going to be a pompous know-it-all, but he turns out to be pretty intelligent and thoughtful.
My biggest complaint about the show is that all of the Native American mysticism stuff at the end is entirely unnecessary. It's pretty obvious that the animals are vessels for some sort of higher power, putting a bunch of spiritual mumbo jumbo into the mix doesn't really add anything to the story or further explain anything. As explanations go, I was satisfied with "because you listen." Now, on the other hand, if Jaye had been a Native American character played by a Native American actor and the show had gone even further into the Native American themes, that could have been cool, but as it is it just feels like pointless and mildly exploitative window-dressing. That said, my understanding is that this stuff was forced by the executives and is not the fault of the writing team.

Had the show gotten a second season, I believe the writers would have given a more detailed explanation as to the how and why. But yes, "because you listen" is all I need for 13 episodes.

Based on the "Planned Episodes" section of the Wikipedia page, I'm not so sure all of the ideas for a second season were all that great:

Based on the "Planned Episodes" section of the Wikipedia page, I'm not so sure all of the ideas for a second season were all that great: I thought the hypothetical Season Two episode where Mahandra gets kidnapped by Reavers and Aaron comes to save her, only to find that the Reavers had assaulted her and then died because she took an anti-rape serum was a little iffy.
